TRAINING

OUR PHILOSOPHY:  At Dogtown we believe a good dog is a trained dog.  As with children, dogs require a set of rules to abide by and they can only learn these rules through training.  All family members must participate and be consistent .  It will only confuse the dog if one family  member does it one way and another family member does it differently.  We do not believe in food reward but gentle correction when doing something wrong and verbal and physical praise when doing something right.  There are no bad dogs, just dogs that have improper training.  With nearly 40 years of training and trainer of hundreds of dogs, there are no problems that we can't help you with.  It does take time, consistency and patience to get your dog to become a good family member.

Birth-14 Weeks:  This is the age puppies develop social skills with their litter mates and with people.  Without proper socialization they could become dog or people aggressive or dog or people shy.  If a puppy is traumatized, it could affect them the rest of their life.  At 12 weeks to 14 weeks you can start housebreaking.
4-6 Months:  Obedience classes can start at 4 months but not boarded training.  Boarded training is more intense because the dog is worked every day when at the kennels.  Boarded training can start at 6 months.
6 Months-1 Year:  The "Terrible Twos" begin at 6 months and continues until about 1 year of age.  During the "Terrible Twos" dogs test their owners for pack leader.  Chewing increases with many of the breeds.  Training can be increased but consistency develops at a later age.  Females should be spayed between 6 months to a 9 months  before their first heat cycle (around 9 months). Some owners, with males, may want to wait until 1 year of age so their dog is able to reach full bone size.
2 Years & Up:  Most dogs become mentally mature at 2 years of age.  Consistency in responding to commands increases.  Intense training can be started and advance obedience can begin.  Most dogs that go through protection or detection training start at this age.

WE USE THE HALTI FOR TRAINING (Instead Of A Metal Training Collar)

000_1001.jpg

The Halti is more humane than a metal training collar and guides the dog by the head and not the neck.  Where the head goes, the body follows.  It keeps the dog focused on you rather than the distraction.  It looks like a muzzle but it does not stop a dog from biting.  It does not restrict the dog from opening his mouth.  He can still play, drink water or eat (not recommended left on unsupervised).  You can purchase a Halti at most pet stores.

WHAT PROBLEMS DOES YOUR DOG HAVE?

JUMPING:  Does your dog jump on you, other family members, guest or on furniture?  Most jumping is caused by improper greeting by you or guest.  We can show you how to eliminate this problem.

PULLING ON THE LEASH:  Instead of using the metal training collar, we use the Halti.  The Halti fits around the dogs muzzle but does not restrict his ability to open or close his mouth.  The Halti guides the dog by the face and where the head goes, the body follows.  With the Halti we can keep your dog from dragging you when on leash.

SIT-DOWN-STAY-STAND:  These are a few of the commands we teach you and your dog.  All commands are taught on the 30 foot lead so we can get your dog conditioned too working at a distance.  In the boarded training, we train your dog with the distraction of other dogs playing near by.  Most dogs will not become consistent until  2 years and older and only if you are consistent.

COME:  Most dogs are not consistent on "coming" until they are 2 years and older and only if you know what to do when they don't come.  Some dogs are never consistent off leash.  This would include, and is not limited, with dogs that have a high predator instinct or dogs that are aggressive towards people or dogs.  At DogTown, we work all dogs on the 30 foot leash but this does not mean we teach your dog to work off leash within the training time he or she spends with us.  All we can do is show you how to eventually get him off leash.

CHEWING-HOUSEBREAKING:  Training will not eliminate chewing or housebreaking problems.  Chewing is natural and most dogs will out grow the problem. You can only control chewing, not eliminate.  We can not housebreak a dog in training class or boarded training but we can guide you on what to do to get your dog through the problem.

AGGRESSION:  The best time to deal with aggression is when he or she is a puppy and they first come home.  If you don't have that luxury and you have an older dog with dominance issues, we can guide you.  Dominance is best dealt with in a private lesson where you are shown how to control the problem.  It is the "nature of the beast" to test the position in the pack.  There can only be one pack leader and we can show you how to maintain that position.  In boarded training we can get the initial control on the problem and then show you how to maintain that control once the dog comes home.  We do not deal with dogs that are already biting people.  We can give you advice over the phone on how to keep the problem from getting worse.
